Covering on an area of some 131 square kilometres, the island is home to 1,159 households with nearly 5,000 people who live mainly on fishing, aquaculture and salt production.

Over the past years, many programs and projects have been prioritised on the island, including building schools and medical stations, strengthening the coastal dyke system, and building concrete roads.

Therefore, the islanders’ spiritual and material lives have been continuously improved. In late 2015, the island commune was recognised to reach the standard of new style rural area.
