The ancient tea tree area in Cam Chinh commune, Cam Lo district, in the central province of Quang Tri, is famous for thousands of tea trees that are between 100-250 years old. They are passed from generation to generation among local residents’ families.
Cam Chinh commune has some 10 age-old tea gardens. According to Nguyen Thi My Hanh, a land and agricultural communal officer, there are thousands of 100-250 year old tea trees here.
Each ancient tea tree is 4-5 metres high. Gardeners have to use ladders to harvest the tea leaves. Each year, they harvest tea twice, in April and August.
Gardener Nguyen Ngoc Tri has 400 ancient tea trees. Many trees have diameters of 30-40 cm.
Mr. Tri’s 400 trees help him earn some VND25-30 million.
Many trees are hollow.
Le Quang Khai’s garden has 400 tea trees that are 70-100 years old.
Some of the trees were grown by his father.
Although ancient trees produce fewer leaves, they provide better quality.
Some trees, although having collapsed, still produce leaves from their stumps.
According to Cam Chinh communal leaders, some 30 families in the communes are planting trees on an area of 1,000-1,500 square metres each.
