It is not difficult to come across the image of shepherds and their herds of hundreds of sheep in farms, fields and mountainous areas in Ninh Thuan, a coastal province in the south-central region of Vietnam.
Sheep in the province are raised mainly for meat. Shepherds tend the sheep from 8-11 a.m before watering them in the fields. They find shade in brushwood to rest. In the afternoon, they continue to take the sheep to other fields for grass and take them back to their farm at 5p.m.
Sheep were raised by the French people in Ninh Thuan province over 100 years ago.
Shepherds take the sheep to fields or mountainous regions for natural food every day.
Each sheep is provided medical check-up before being released to the fields.
To reach the fields, shepherds have to take the sheep up to 5-6 kilometres. The main food for sheep is wild grass.
Shepherds inspect the number of sheep under the fierce sun.
Children wander with their parents in the fields.
The sheep take baths and drink water in a lake in Ninh Hai district.
Waterless grass fields are destinations of livelihood for shepherd families in Ninh Thuan province.
Sunset is the time for the final sheep to be taken back to their home pastures.
