Famous braised fish village busy for Tet

Thousands of braised fish pots have been made in the village traditionally producing braised fish pots in Ly Nhan district in the northern province of Ha Nam, in order to satisfy the demand of customers everywhere before the lunar New Year festival (Tet).

In the past, the village was famous and referenced in classic literature by author Nam Cao.

At present, the village is famous for its traditional braised fish.

Mr. Toan’s family is very busy with the work before Tet.

Only black amur fish weighing 4 kilograms or more are used for cooking.

Spices used for braising fish include ginger, galangal, chili, onion, lemon and fish sauce.


Fish is arranged with traditional spices.

Fish is cooked in 1.5 kilogram pots with longan firewood as it provides stable fire.

Cooking the fish is the most painstaking step.

When the pots boil, the fire is kept low and they boil on the coals.

The pots are checked every 45 minutes and the water is added if necessary.

The fish is cooked around12-15 hours.

Finished products are well-cooked, with spices imbued in the fish.

Fire and water is adjusted throughout the cooking process.


Pots weighing between 1.5-4 kilograms are sold at VND500,000 – VND1.2 million each.
