Purple onion capital in Quang Ngai

With 180 hectares of purple onion near the beach surrounded by volcanoes and coral reefs, Binh Hai commune is known as the purple onion capital on the mainland.
At the end of April, purple onion fields in Binh Hai commune, Binh Son district, Quang Ngai are in their second harvest of the year. People grow three crops a year, with an output of about 1,800 tons a year.
Mr. Pham Van Xuyen, Vice Chairman of the Binh Hai Communal People’s Committee, said that the purple onion variety originated from Ly Son and was brought here for testing more than 30 years ago, opening up new directions for people. Now, purple onion production has become a traditional profession in the commune with about 400 households growing it.
The owner of the field loads newly harvested purple onion to bring home.
After harvesting 2,000 square meters, Mr. Huynh Trung Thu in Thanh Thuy village stored 3 tons of purple onions in front of his house. With an onion price of about VND30,000 per kilogram, for each onion crop Mr. Thu's family achieves a revenue of about VND90 million, gaining profit of more than VND50 million.
Purple onions are bought and sold by traders to Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and many provinces and cities nationwide.

A purple onion crop lasts about 50 days. Onion fields are watered with automatic irrigation systems.
With three crops per year, on average, families in Binh Hai commune can earn hundreds of millions of VND.
