The Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe wastewater treatment plant, with an investment of nearly VND6 trillion, covering over 33 hectares, is the largest wastewater treatment facility in Southeast Asia located in Ho Chi Minh City.
Located in Thanh My Loi ward, Thu Duc City, the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe wastewater treatment plant is currently the largest project in Vietnam and Southeast Asia with a daily processing capacity of 480,000 cubic meters.
The project includes components such as filtration tanks, sludge treatment tanks, pumping stations, drainage culverts, embankments and an operational center, constructed over an area of approximately 38 hectares.
With a processing capacity of 480,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe plant is the largest of its kind in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, employing the most advanced biological treatment technology available currently.
Mr. Bui Thanh Tan, Director of the Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Management Board of Ho Chi Minh City, stated that package XL-02 is the largest and most important component of the entire Ho Chi Minh City Environmental Sanitation Project Phase 2.
The wastewater treatment plant includes an administrative building, lift pump station, preliminary treatment area, biological treatment area, settling tanks, sludge treatment area, and odor treatment facilities.
Key components such as filtration systems and wastewater treatment have completed their rough phases. The sludge treatment tanks and pumping stations are currently being accelerated in construction progress.
The SBR wastewater treatment area features a rectangular shape, constructed with concrete walls resembling a fortress.
According to the investor, the plant employs advanced MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) biological treatment technology, utilizing mobile carriers for microorganisms to adhere and grow, effectively removing organic substances from wastewater. Wastewater is pumped into the biological treatment tank, then through the clarifier tank for settlement before undergoing disinfection using ultraviolet (UV) light.
Construction workers are tirelessly working on the massive site amidst challenging weather conditions.
Once operational, all wastewater from residential areas along the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal spanning districts 1, 3, Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan, Tan Binh, and District 2 will be directed to the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe wastewater treatment plant through a 17-kilometer-long drainage system.
This plant is one of the components of the Ho Chi Minh City Environmental Sanitation Project - Phase 2. Initially valued at USD307 million, competitive international bidding reduced the cost by USD72 million, bringing the total down to approximately USD235.1 million (equivalent to nearly VND6 trillion).
Currently, the total urban wastewater treatment capacity of Ho Chi Minh City is 644,000 cubic meters per day, covering about 40% of the daily wastewater volume. Upon completion and operation of the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe wastewater treatment plant, Ho Chi Minh City will increase its urban wastewater treatment capacity to over 1.1 million cubic meters per day.
