Speaking at the event, Vietnamese Ambassador to Hungary Nguyen Thi Bich Thao reiterated the assessment of Hungarian leaders, affirming that the Vietnamese community in Hungary is a united, honest community, deeply integrated into the host society, making encouraging contributions to the host country and to the traditional and good friendship between the two countries and peoples.
Former Hungarian Minister of Defence Simicsko Istvan, Co-Chairman of the Hungary-Vietnam Friendship Committee and the Hungary-Southeast Asia Parliamentary Friendship Group, expressed his joy and honour in attending an important event of the Vietnamese community.
Thanks to Hungary's Eastern Opening policy, the two countries have a similar development direction and share a close relationship, in which the Vietnamese community plays an important role, he said.
In the report of the 2017-2024 term, Chairman of the Overseas Vietnamese Association in Hungary Vu Quy Duong said that the association aims to help the community integrate deeply into Hungarian society, while contributing to strengthening the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two peoples; preserving the language, national identity, and promoting the cultural traditions of Vietnam in Hungary; and encouraging oversease Vietnamese to contribute to the construction of the host country as well as always look towards their homeland.
Mr. Duong said that in the 2017-2024 term, despite facing difficulties due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine, the association has completed its assigned tasks, implementing many activities for the community such as cultural, art and sports exchange programs to preserve and spread the good values of the nation; donation campaigns to help people in difficult circumstances, victims affected by natural disasters and pandemics in their homeland as well as help Hungarians in difficulty, including the annual Christmas gift giving program for retirement facilities and schools for disabled children and orphans.
The association has submitted a petition to the Hungarian government asking for recognition of the Vietnamese community as an ethnic minority group in the country, he added.
The Congress elected the Executive Committee for the 2024-2029 term with 42 members.
Founded in April 2008, the Vietnamese Association in Hungary is a legally recognised organisation by the Hungarian Court. Over the last 16 years, the association has effectively coordinated activities for its member chapters and represented the Vietnamese community in the country./.
