On September 11th, the Vietnam Seaports Association (VPA) organized its annual meeting to assess activities of Vietnam’s seaports in recent time and introduce new development orientations for the near future.

The meeting attracted the participation of nearly 300 delegates and leaders of 62 seaports which are members of the VPA. Quang Ninh People’s Committee Chairman Nguyen Van Doc attended the annual event.

At the meeting, VPA reported that in 2012, total commodity volume through the 62 seaports reached 174 million tonnes, a 10 percent rise against a year previous.

However, commodity volume through the seaport system in northern Vietnam dropped by 3 percent from 2011, with decreasing volume of coal exports one cause for the reduction.

Currently, the operation of Vietnam’s seaport system showed shortcomings such as non-synchrony between infrastructure and supporting service and new seaport projects not displaying efficiency.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Doc applauded the results of the VPA’s previous meetings which helped its members, including seaports in Quang Ninh, develop in the right direction, contributing to the socio-economic development of localities nationwide.

He asked the association to continue to attach special importance to developing logistics, which should be considered an important condition to develop Vietnam’s seaports./.
