Among 8,900 hectares of tidal flats, some 2,700 hectares can be used to raise seafood. In the first 9 months of the year, the district has raised seafood on 857 hectares, producing 358 tonnes of salt and brackish water seafood and 80 tonnes of fresh water seafood.

Of the seafood, shrimp raising takes up the largest area of tidal flats. There are currently 343 families raising shrimp in the district, using an area of 679 hectares in the spring-summer season, with 80.2 million breeding shrimps, mainly sugpo prawns. In 2013, the district is expected to harvest 140 tonnes of shrimp with an estimated value of VND27 billion.

Crabs are also a favourite breeding seafood in the district. Inefficient area for shrimp raising has been re-fitted for crab raising, especially in communes that have a large area of mangrove forests such as Dong Ngu, Dong Hai, Hai Lang and Dong Rui. So far, the area for crab in the district is 19.4 hectares with 0.2 million breeding ones, gaining an expected amount of 10 tonnes of crab.

Besides seafood raising, commercial fishery is also considered an important sector in the district. It has 370 ships operating at sea, harvesting over 2,000 tonnes of fish, shrimp, cuttle-fish, mollusc and others.

In 2014, Tien Yen district will strive to achieve the total fisheries raising productivity of 2,900 tonnes and the production value at VND33.8 billion; and the exploitation productivity of nearly 2,500 tonnes./.
