Northern district’s women boost poverty reduction

The Hai Ha district Women’s Union in the northern province of Quang Ninh is actively carrying out assistance programs to support its poor members, with an aim to help them advance domestic economic development, stabilise their lives and escape poverty sustainably.

Luu Thi Nhan’s family is among the poor in Quang Dien commune. Earlier, the widowed woman led a difficult life when she and her family lived on some allotments of rice. In early 2013, she was assisted with VND5 million by the district Women’s Union. She spent the money on raising pigs and chickens. At present, she gets profits from the pigs and expands the scale of raising, contributing to improving her family’s life.
The assistance promoting production among poor women started in 2010, with the participation of 266 families. So far 107 have escaped poverty, thanks to the program.
In addition, the district Women’s Union has carried out 25 training courses on planting and breeding techniques for over 1,600 members, and worked with the district Bank for Social Policies to realise loan programs worth nearly VND70 billion for poor women, which helped a lot of poor families escape from poverty.
In the upcoming time, the district Women’s Union will increase its support for poor members to boost economic development, and will give training on technology, build up pilot economic development models to be expanded across the district, and grant loans for poor women to help them escape poverty sustainably./.
