Over VND200 million donated to assist storm-stricken people

People in Long Tien Pagoda hamlet in Ha Long city, the northern province of Quang Ninh, have volunteered to donate some VND200 million to assist people in central provinces who were affected by storm Wutip, the 10th storm hitting Vietnam this year.

The donation aims to respond to an appeal by the provincial Fatherland Front.

The donation was in money and items, mainly rice, noodles, cooking oil, clothes, blankets and mosquito nets.

Between October 19-22, 15 tons of rice, 200 packages of noodles, 10 packages of cooking oil, 120 blankets, together with many clothes and books were collected, together worth VND200 million. Of which, an overseas Vietnamese volunteered to donate 10 tons of rice.

The donation campaign will last until the end of October. All the items will be transported to central people.

Initial statistics show that storm Wutip has caused losses totalling 11 trillion VND (USD517 million) for central coastal provinces.

Quang Binh was the hardest hit with losses topping VND8 trillion, followed by Nghe An with VND1.3 trillion, Ha Tinh with VND1.17 trillion, Thua Thien-Hue with over VND300 billion, and Thanh Hoa with VND140 billion.

The storm killed at least 16 people and injured 225 others./.
