Methadone treatment program carried out in Dong Trieu district

(CPV) - The Dong Trieu district People’s Committee and the Quang Ninh provincial Health Department organized a workshop on November 1 to carry out an opium-substance detoxification treatment program with Methadone in Dong Trieu district and criterion to choose drug users for the program.

Methadone is a treatment medicine for opiates addiction. Users of oral methadone will not use opium substances, they will not share injection, therefore it will reduce the risk of HIV infection among drug addicts and help them reintegrate into the community .In recent years, Quang Ninh province has successfully operated three methadone treatment facilities in Cam Pha city, Van Don district and Ha Long city. Dong Trieu district is the 4^th locality to implement the program, where about 200-250 drug users will begin replacement treatment with Methadone.

At the conference, the leaders of the provincial Centre for HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control presented the situation of drug use and the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the world, in the country and in the province of Quang Ninh; the method for opium replacement treatment with methadone; and the results so far in the province (the province has treated for 683 drug users by September 30, 2013 in the three facilities).

The conference achieved high consensus among the mass organizations from the province to district and communes in the locality, which is a premise and an important basis for the methadone treatment facility in Dong Trieu district to soon come into operation./.
