Quang Ninh provincial leader meets with IUCN expert

On November 6, Vu Thi Thu Thuy, Deputy Chairwoman of the Quang Ninh provincial People’s Committee met with Paul Dingwall, an expert from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

He added that with strict cooperation between all sides, Ha Long Bay will be a natural heritage that is strictly managed and preserved.

He went on to say that he hoped Quang Ninh province would take advantage of professional and financial support from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to exploit and preserve the heritage.

Deputy Chairwoman of the provincial People’s Committee Vu Thi Thu Thuy confirmed that the province had carried out diverse strong measures to preserve Ha Long Bay heritage, including stopping several coal and cement projects, relocating people who affect the preservation of the bay, limiting the number of ships and boats on the bay, and protecting the water environment. In addition, the province is making a general planning on developing tourism, with special focus on Ha Long Bay. It has also issued important resolutions on the preservation and promotion of Ha Long Bay heritage values. Furthermore, every project involving the bay gets the consensus from the UNESCO.

She said that she hoped the IUCN would help Quang Ninh province well preserve, manage and exploit the value of Ha Long Bay, and have specific reports to UNESCO on the province’s efforts in the preservation of the heritage./.
