Uong Bi recognised as type 2 urban area

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has signed decision recognizing Uong Bi city as a type 2 urban area under Quang Ninh province.

Uong Bi city is a focus of the northern development triangle between Hanoi, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh. It has a strategic location for socio-economic development and national defence and security in the west of Quang Ninh. In addition, the city is an industrial and energy urban area in the northern coastal region.

Uong Bi city is defined as industrial, service, tourism, health and training centre of Quang Ninh province. It has Yen Tu landscape as a centre of Buddhism, recognized as special national relic by the State.

Since being recognised as a type 3 urban area in 2008, Uong Bi city’s appearance changed rapidly towards spaciousness and modernity, and people’s lives have been improving. The city has invested over VND1.3 trillion and mobilized a socialization fund of VND269 billion VND to improve and develop its urban infrastructure.

The city’s annual GDP growth has averaged 13.7 percent during the 2010-2012 period. The state budget revenue reached over 2,000 billion VND. Income per capita was 2,600 USD, 1.9 times the national average, with a poverty rate of 1.86 percent./.
