Ethnic minorities’ lives ceaselessly improved

Thanks to the implementation of the program on socio-economic development in extremely disadvantaged regions inhabited by ethnic minorities, local residents in these areas of the northern province of Quang Ninh have enjoyed a continuously improved standard of living, according to the provincial People’s Committee.

The report submitted to the inspection delegation from the Board of Culture and Society under the provincial People’s Council showed that there are currently 113 ethnic minorities-inhabited mountainous communes in the province, including 25 considered extremely disadvantaged. During the implementation of the program started in 2011 and scheduled to conclude in 2015, the provincial People’s Committee has reserved adequate resources to invest in the production and socio-economic infrastructure, especially in traffic, electricity, safe water, irrigation, school, medical station and market systems.
In particular, over the past 5 years, the province has spent over VND28 trillion carrying out the program on building new style rural areas, with VND250 billion of which having been allocated to extremely disadvantaged communes.
The investment has helped to continuously improve people’s living condition, preserve traditional identities, maintain political security, social order and the border sovereignty in ethnic minorities-inhabited regions.
However, the provincial People’s Committee admitted that difficulties still remained in the lives of the ethnic minorities with a high poverty rate (53.4%), low and unstable income and unsustainable methods employed to tackle poverty reduction.
During a meeting between the provincial People’s Committee with the Board of Culture and Society on November 3, representatives from the provincial People’s Committee asked the provincial People’s Council to promptly issue policies to encourage enterprises to invest in the agricultural sector and in rural areas while considering earmarking the provincial budget to assist 7 border communes./.
