Northern province supports socio-economic development among ethnic minorities

The northern province of Quang Ninh started carrying out diverse programs on boosting socio-economic development in ethnic minorities-inhabited extremely disadvantaged communes in 2011, bringing about practical efficiency for beneficiaries.

Notably, program 135 on socio-economic development in extremely disadvantaged communes in ethnic minorities-inhabited and mountainous communes, has been supported with over VND101 billion for the building works and projects, which have contributed to assisting people’s production, increasing the quality of human resources and the quality of residents’ production.

The provincial People’s Committee has issued diverse decisions allocating loans for people’s production, including decision 1463 allocating nearly VND2.6 billion entrusted to the provincial Bank for Social Policies for extremely disadvantaged ethnic minority families; and decision 2147 distributing VND2 billion for ethnic minority families’ production. Thanks to the loans, ethnic minority families can expand breeding grounds, plantation, housing, safe water and environmental hygiene.

In addition, the province has given vocational training and job creation for members of extremely disadvantaged ethnic minority families. From 2011-2013, over 2,800 ethnic minorities received vocational training support, thus contributing to changing their ways of production and improving their lives.

Moreover, the program on building new-style rural areas has invested over VND256 billion in improving rural infrastructure and people’s living standard.

There are 21 ethnic minority groups with over 140,000 people in the province, accounting for some 12.5% of its population. They live over a large area and mainly in the mountains. Due to a tough geographical location, they face difficulties in socio-economic development./.
