Vietnam boosts trade promotion in South Africa

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) will send a trade promotion delegation to South Africa to exhibit Vietnamese goods at retail and wholesale supermarkets from May 8th-16th, 2019.

 Coffee among agricultural products to be introduced to the market 

Through the program, businesses will have chances to meet partners and work with importers in order to boost exports of Vietnamese goods to South Africa.

Exhibited goods will include agricultural products (rice, coffee, pepper, tea and coconut rice), processed food, confectionery, soft drinks, seafood, textiles, household appliances, office supplies, and leather and shoes.

In addition, the delegation will join activities to survey the market and arrange trade activities with South African businesses.

Ms. Nguyen Minh Phuong, Head of the Department of West Asia - Africa, said that South Africa is the top country on socio-economic development in Africa, and is the largest trade partner of Vietnam in the region.

Two-way trade turnover reached more than USD1 billion in 2018, in which Vietnam’s export value hit about USD724 million with abundant export commodities such as mobile phone and accessories, machinery, pepper, coffee, textiles, footwear of all kinds, iron and steel, cashew, wooden products, chemical substance, fruits and vegetables and rice.

South Africa has a developed supermarkets system which not only serves its demand but also reaches other African countries. The five top food retail supermarkets accounting for 60% of South Africa’s total retail sales are Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Spar, Woolworths and Walmart’s Cambridge Foods.

On the sidelines, the ministry will coordinate with Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Cape Town and Johannesburg to organize seminars in the two cities.

In addition, MoIT will assist businesses to display and promote products at Advance Cash & Carry and Shoprite markets of South Africa./.
