Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that farmers in the Mekong Delta provinces such as Tien Giang and Vinh Long have boosted production of off-season durian, thereby significantly increasing output in the past seven months. Currently, about 50%-60% of durian areas in the Mekong Delta are growing in the off-season. In addition, unfavorable weather has caused durian output to decrease sharply in Thailand, creating more market opportunities for Vietnamese durian.
Off-season durian in the Mekong Delta contributed most to the billion-dollar durian export figure and a part of the main-season durian in this region and durian in the Central Coast and Southeast regions. This means that a large amount of durian, especially durian in the Central Highlands, will be exported in the last months of this year.
Data from the Department of Crop Production under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shows that the durian area nationwide is currently about 150,000 hectares, of which more than 75,000 hectares are in the Central Highlands. Durian is currently grown in four regions: the Mekong Delta, the Southeastern region, the Central Coast and the Central Highlands.
The Mekong Delta provinces enter the main durian harvest season from April to August. The Central Coastal provinces harvest durian from April to June. From May to July is the durian harvest season in the Southeast. In the Central Highlands, durian harvest time is from July to November. With the above favorable factors, agricultural experts believe that durian exports in the last months of this year will earn higher value, thereby bringing the whole year’s export value to 3.5 billion USD ./.
