(CPV) - The first shipments of fresh coconuts were officially exported to the Chinese market at the end of October. If this opportunity is well taken advantage of, coconut exports to China could bring in an additional 200 - 300 million USD this year, contributing to bringing Vietnam’s total coconut export turnover to the 1 billion USD mark soon.
Vietnam sees great potential from coconut export

Binh Dinh is the locality with the largest coconut growing area in the Central region. Currently, the whole province has more than 9,300 hectares of coconut growing area, of which about 2,500 hectares of Siamese coconut have the potential for export.

The province strives to develop the coconut growing area to 10,000 hectares by 2030, of which more than one third will be grown in an organic direction, focusing on applying high technology in production.

The official export of fresh coconuts to China will help increase the price of drinking coconut water. This will bring better income to farmers, thereby encouraging them to expand coconut growing area, ensuring sustainable development and creating favorable conditions for building production - consumption chains between businesses and farmers.

Aiming to take advantage of coconut export opportunities, Binh Dinh is ready to expand the consumption market. So far, Chinese customs have inspected and agreed to grant codes for five coconut growing areas in the province (Phu Cat district has four codes, Hoai An district one code) with a total area of over 62 hectares. It continues to guide the remaining localities to build codes for growing areas aimed at export.

In order to increase the value of exported coconuts, it is necessary to grow coconuts in an organic direction and apply high technology in production. In addition, the provincial agricultural sector orients concentrated growing areas to apply high technology, organic production and VietGAP in order to ensure sustainable development of coconut trees. At the same time, local authorities will continue to coordinate with businesses to build a production - consumption chain, and support the registration of growing area codes and packaging facilities for export.

Binh Dinh is calling for businesses to invest in processing factories, act as purchasing hubs and participate in the growing and consumption chain of coconut products for export to the Chinese market. This is the basis for Binh Dinh fresh coconut to ensure the requirements for granting codes for packaging facilities and implementing standards for coconuts suitable for the Chinese market.

China currently imports coconuts from seven countries and territories around the world. Of which, Vietnam is the 3rd largest coconut supplier to China, with more than 111,000 tons./.
