During the two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam's e-commerce has grown and the number of online shoppers has increased rapidly, many businesses, individuals and business households have participated in e-commerce activities.
In 2024, e-commerce is expected to maintain a growth rate of about 18-20 percent/year.
Vietnam is the country with the highest growth rate in Southeast Asia in terms of online shopping. Revenue and sales volume on online retail platforms are forecast to continue to increase strongly, possibly reaching more than 310 trillion VND in 2024, up 35% compared to 2023.
According to a recent study by Meta, up to 45% of consumers regularly shop on e-commerce platforms after viewing information on Facebook/Instagram, and 20% of consumers buy directly on Facebook.
In addition, in recent times, the application of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) has enhanced the online shopping experience, personalizing the customer experience or optimizing shopping through voice search.
The e-commerce market in Vietnam has also formed service supply systems including: technology platform services supporting e-commerce transactions, safe online payment systems, marketing services, online marketing communications and delivery services. The connection and sharing of these service supply systems increasingly helps optimize the process of linking manufacturers with consumers.
However, issues related to ensuring the origin of goods, ensuring the safety and security of personal information, e-commerce logistics infrastructure has failed to keep up with the growth rate of the market and consumers’ confidence in online transactions are still problems that need solutions for Vietnamese e-commerce in the following stages.
To develop e-commerce further in 2024 and the following years, experts say that it is necessary for ministries and sectors to join hands to come up with many comprehensive strategies and solutions to promote e-commerce development towards goals such as protecting consumer rights; strengthening regional connectivity; green and sustainable development; narrowing the gap between localities and regions through digital platforms.
E-commerce in recent years has been affirming its important role in the digital economy in Vietnam. With appropriate solutions and strategies from management agencies, along with efforts from businesses to take advantage of opportunities and overcome challenges of the market, e-commerce promises not only to continue to develop rapidly but also towards sustainable development in the future./.
