Shrimp accounts for more than 60% of Vietnam's seafood export turnover to Australia in the first two months of 2024, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
The association said that in the two months, Vietnam's seafood export turnover to Australia recorded an increase of 33% over the same period last year.
Shrimp, pangasius and some marine fish species are the main commodity groups Vietnam exported to this market. Of which, shrimp accounted for over 60% of the total turnover with 34 million USD in the two months, equivalent to an increase of 20% over the same period of 2023.

Pangasius export turnover to this market increased by nearly 70%, worth more than 6 million USD, while exports of other marine fish products (except tuna) increased sharply by 72%.
According to VASEP, Australia is a potential market, with more than 65% of its domestic seafood consumption from imported sources. Currently, Australia imports seafood from more than 95 markets around the world, of which Vietnam is the country’s leading seafood supplier, accounting for over 22% of Australia’s total import turnover.
VASEP believes that this is a market with good potential for Vietnamese seafood businesses thanks to the CPTPP agreement, good cooperative relationship and the active attention of the two governments for trade activities, including seafood trade.
After CPTPP took effect, Vietnam's seafood exports to Australia grew continuously from 197 million USD in 2018 to 365 million USD in 2022. In the context of a general decline in the world, seafood export turnover to this market decreased to 312 million USD in 2023.
In addition, Australia is also a partner providing seafood to Vietnamese businesses, with the main product being rock lobster with an imported volume of about 40,000 tons a year./.
