Hungary honors Vietnamese translator

Hungary has awarded the Gold Cross Medal to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Ngoc Can, who has successfully translated many famous Hungarian literary works into Vietnamese.

On behalf of the Hungarian President, First Officer of the Hungarian National Assembly Márta Mátrai awarded the Gold Cross Medal to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Ngoc Can on April 17.

The Gold Cross Medal is awarded by the Hungarian President to Hungarian citizens or foreign citizens who have made outstanding contributions to promoting and exchanging Hungarian culture with other countries. The medal was awarded to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Ngoc Can in recognition of his career in introducing and promoting Hungarian culture through literary and translation activities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Márta Mátrai said that the country, government as well as artists and writers of Hungary appreciate Mr. Can's contributions in promoting Hungarian culture and literature. She hopes that in the coming time, Mr. Vu Ngoc Can will have good health to continue to contribute to the work of connecting the two countries’ culture and literature.

Hungarian Ambassador to Vietnam Baloghdi Tibor emphasized that through teaching and translation activities, Mr. Vu Ngoc Can has become an indispensable figure in the friendly and cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Hungary.

Expressing his honor at receiving a noble award from the Hungarian State, Mr. Vu Ngoc Can said that the Gold Cross Medal is a recognition of his affection and efforts in conveying and promoting Hungarian literature to Vietnam, as well as Vietnamese literature to Hungary.

He affirmed that he would continue to be a bridge to bring the culture and literature of Hungary and Vietnam closer together as long as he has enough health.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Ngoc Can was born in 1949 in Chau Son commune, Phu Ly city, Ha Nam. In 1967, he was sent to study in Hungary, in literature. Returning to Vietnam in 1972, he was assigned to teach at the University of Foreign Languages (Hanoi University now)./.
