Speaking to a Vietnam News Agency reporter, General P.K. Chakravorty, former Indian Defense Attaché to Vietnam (1996-1999), emphasized his profound respect for the VPA. He described it as "one of the most professional armies," highlighting its significant victories, including defeating French colonial forces and the American imperialists, and assisting the Cambodian people in overthrowing the genocidal Pol Pot regime.
Under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the VPA has continuously developed and achieved remarkable milestones, he stated.
General Chakravorty praised Vietnam's defense modernization strategy, initiated in 2016, aiming for full modernization by 2030. He commended Vietnam’s early adherence to international commitments since 2020 and its active participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
"The presence of Vietnamese military officers in international peacekeeping missions demonstrates Vietnam's responsibility for global peace while elevating its stature on the international stage," he noted. He added that over its 80-year history, the VPA has achieved resounding victories, effectively fulfilling its mission to defend and build the nation. The VPA remains a source of pride and a steadfast pillar of support for the Vietnamese people.
Professor Carl Thayer, a renowned expert from the Australian Defence Force Academy, University of New South Wales, lauded the VPA's formation, growth, and its critical role in safeguarding Vietnam’s independence over eight decades.
He particularly commended the army’s professionalism, creativity, discipline and collaborative approach, noting its humanitarian efforts and contributions to peacekeeping operations.
Professor Thayer highlighted Vietnam’s deployment of female military personnel in these missions, describing this as a demonstration of flexibility and cultural sensitivity, leaving a positive impression on the international community.
According to Professor Thayer, Vietnam has significantly expanded its global presence, cooperating with major nations and making substantial contributions to global peace. Vietnam currently ranks 20th globally among contributors to United Nations peacekeeping forces. "This is a defensive, non-aligned force contributing to global stability, which is truly remarkable," he stated./.
