At the United Nations Headquarters (UN) in New York, the first meeting in 2023 of the UN Security Council took place with representatives of 79 countries sending forces to join the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Under the chair of UN Security Council President Mozambique, the meeting listened to the UNMISS update report, and discussed the local situation and the mission's activities.
Reaffirming Vietnam's support for the UNMISS mission in South Sudan, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, emphasized the importance of building trust among stakeholders, including between the mission and the local authorities and people, to facilitate South Sudan's elections and constitution-making process. Vietnam is willing to continue to contribute to this effort by deploying and participating in activities to support and engage with the host community, including the very important role of female peacekeepers.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang shared the efforts as well as creativity in carrying out the tasks of Vietnamese military cadres, soldiers and peacekeeping police in South Sudan, especially in taking care of people's lives, safety and health, thereby enhancing the cohesion and trust of the people for the UN Peacekeeping Mission. He said that these are successful lessons that need to be replicated for UNMISS to promote its role in supporting reconstruction, and promoting peace, stability and development in South Sudan.
The UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for South Sudan and Head of the UNMISS Mission Nicholas Haysom, in an exchange with Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, highly appreciated the effective contribution, creativity, and high sense of discipline of the officials, a military medical officer at a Level 2 field hospital and a Vietnamese peacekeeping police officer at UNMISS. Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang affirmed that Vietnam is committed to continuing to deploy military and police forces to participate in UN peacekeeping activities in general and UNMISS in particular in the coming time.
Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for South Sudan and Head of the UNMISS, during a discussion with Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, appreciated the active and effective contributions, creativeness and efforts to overcome difficulties of medical officers and soldiers of the level-2 field hospital and peacekeepers of Vietnam at the UNMISS. Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang affirmed Vietnam's commitment to continue sending military and police personnel to participate in UN peacekeeping activities in general and UNMISS in particular in the coming time./.
