The Expat Insider 2024 report is one of the world's largest expat surveys conducted by InterNations, a global expat network with more than 4 million members. Accordingly, Vietnam is ranked eighth out of 53 countries that foreigners want to settle in most.

This year InterNations surveyed more than 12,000 foreigners living in 174 countries and territories. The report evaluates criteria including the best and worst places to live for expats, quality of life, working conditions abroad and personal finances.

Particularly, this year Vietnam continues to hold the top position among 53 countries in the "Personal Finance" index, which is the level of satisfaction of foreigners with their salary and living expenses. 86% of foreigners living in Vietnam said that the cost of living here is at a good level, 40% higher than the average of other surveyed countries in the world. Meanwhile, 65% said that they are satisfied with the current financial situation in Vietnam, 54% higher than the average of surveyed countries around the world.

According to Mr. Shin Dong Gon, a Korean who has lived in Vietnam for 18 years, the affordable cost of living is one of the main reasons why he chose Vietnam to settle permanently.

“Last year, I went back to the Republic of Korea, I could only eat one dish for 200k there, but in Vietnam I could get a delicious and full meal with this amount of money. Before, I used to buy food to cook for myself, but this year I'm busier and don't have time, so I eat out more. The bun cha (vermicelli with grilled pork and fresh herbs), bun nem (vermicelli with spring roll) and fish noodle shops are very delicious and cheap. I feel like a Vietnamese, everything is very good and convenient to me," Mr. Shin shared.

Besides, Vietnam is also considered a worthy place to live by two criteria: "Easy to settle down" and "Working environment". Foreigners working in Vietnam are satisfied with their situation, helping Vietnam reach 14th place in the “Working Environment” Index. Foreigners are especially satisfied with their work-life balance: nearly three-quarters (73%) votes this indicator positively (compared to 63% globally). 57% of surveyed people said that it is easier to make friends with locals in Vietnam compared to the global average of 38%.

“I think Vietnamese people are extremely friendly, especially when they know you are a foreigner and they see that you need help, they are willing to help. Even though their English is not good, Vietnamese people always try their best to use body language. Making friends with Vietnamese people is really easy," said Ms. Yu-jiung Yang from Taiwan (China) living in Vietnam.

However, besides many favorable factors, about 55% of foreigners participating in the survey feel unsatisfied with the air quality in Vietnam. This result once again shows that although there is still room for improvement, Vietnam continues to maintain its position as one of the most attractive and livable destinations in the eyes of foreigners./.
