Vietnamese engineering team’s skills in constructing temporary airfields impress United Nations

As part of a visit to units of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) from November 24 to 28, Mr. Vadim Potanin, Senior Representative from the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at the UN Headquarters in New York, and Ms. Uchenna Odenigbo, Head of Mission Support for UNISFA, visited and worked with Vietnam’s Engineering Unit 3.

As part of a visit to units of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) from November 24 to 28, Mr. Vadim Potanin, Senior Representative from the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at the UN Headquarters in New York, and Ms. Uchenna Odenigbo, Head of Mission Support for UNISFA, visited and worked with Vietnam’s Engineering Unit 3.
During the meeting, Lieutenant Colonel Pham Van Hao, Commander of Engineering Unit 3, provided an overview of the unit's missions and accomplishments, particularly in repairing and upgrading roads, constructing SmartCamps, and conducting humanitarian support activities for the local community.
Since their deployment to the region, Vietnam’s Engineering Unit 3 has been carrying out a wide range of tasks, including repairing and upgrading vital supply routes for the mission and local transportation, as well as constructing SmartCamps under UNISFA's plans. Their humanitarian efforts for local residents have been highly praised by the mission leadership.
After the inspection, Mr. Vadim Potanin expressed his admiration for the Vietnamese engineers’ technical expertise in building temporary airfields and SmartCamps, especially their organization and planning of technical areas. Beyond providing food for the UN, the Vietnamese “blue berets” have excelled in self-sufficiency, landscape improvement and disease prevention.
Mr. Potanin emphasized the expectation that the Vietnamese Engineering Unit would continue overcoming challenges and fulfilling their assignments, contributing to the stability and development of the local community./.
