Sharing his memorable time in Vietnam when the country struggled against the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Park highly valued Vietnam’s efforts to learn and apply international experience and roll out creative prevention and control measures.

The Vietnamese Government has coped with COVID-19 in a timely, strong and firm manner through the approach to the entire society with an efficient system of emergency public health supervision and response and highly qualified medical force, he said, highlighting the rising public awareness in Vietnam in actively implementing prevention and control measures.

The Vietnamese Government responded to the COVID-19 outbreak in a timely, forceful and decisive manner with a whole-of-society approach, with a robust public health emergency response and surveillance system, dedicated and highly skilled healthcare staff on both the preventive and clinical management side. Along with that, people's awareness is increasing on the implementation of active prevention measures.

In particular, the success in rapidly deploying the vaccination campaign has made Vietnam one of the countries with the highest vaccination rates in the world. Up to now, the COVID-19 epidemic has been effectively and sustainably controlled, although still having to be vigilant and take precautions, Vietnam has moved to a state of flexible and safe adaptation, gradually boosting its socio-economic recovery and development.

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam highly appreciated the support of WHO and Mr. Kidong Park personally for Vietnam in COVID-19 disease prevention and control in particular, as well as WHO's support for Vietnam in more than 40 years in almost all fields of health such as disease prevention, control of infectious and non-communicable diseases, expanded vaccination, health system development, human resource training, construction consultancy, health policy, health financing innovation, aid coordination, health insurance, Millennium Development Goals, tuberculosis, malaria and HIV.

The Deputy Prime Minister hoped that, in his new role and position, Dr. Kidong Park would continue to actively contribute to the cooperation activities between WHO and Vietnam in the field of health, contributing to the successful implementation of the goal of building a modern and complete Vietnamese health system step by step, towards equity, efficiency and development, meeting the growing and diverse needs of the people for health protection, care and promotion, reducing morbidity and mortality, increasing life expectancy, improving the quality of life, achieving and exceeding the targets set out in the strategy on care and protection of people's health for the period 2020 - 2030./.
