According to a report by the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) in Moscow, during a live broadcast on Channel 1 on July 19, Russian political scientist and former State Duma Deputy Vyacheslav Nikonov expressed deep condolences to the Party, State, and people of Vietnam. Nikonov referred to Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong as a "great friend of Russia," emphasizing that "he was truly a wonderful friend of our country and had a significant impact on the successful development of relations between the two countries. Our deep condolences go out to comrade Nguyen Phu Trong."
The Komsomol Youth Truth highlighted that under Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's leadership, Vietnam achieved significant accomplishments in economic, political and social fields, ensuring stable GDP growth.
Similarly, Japanese media emphasized that Vietnam's most outstanding achievements during Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's tenure were high economic growth, an elevated international standing, and a "comprehensive, multi-directional, and balanced diplomacy" policy amid a polarized world.
According to VNA's correspondent in Tokyo, NHK Television, Nikkei and Yomiuri newspapers stated that Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong pursued "comprehensive diplomacy" to strengthen and maintain good relations with the U.S., China, Japan, Russia and other countries while leading multi-directional diplomacy, even as the international community became increasingly polarized.
Ha Hoang Hop, Executive Chairman of Viet Think Tank, remarked: "Vietnam has developed its regional stature under Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, asserting itself as a proactive country within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)."
Meanwhile, the Asahi newspaper highlighted that under General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's leadership, Vietnam positioned its bilateral relationship with Japan as a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; while trade exchanges and the dispatch of technical interns also deepened. In 2015, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited Japan and met with then-Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.
Nikkei Asia, Yomiuri and Asahi also recalled that Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong conducted a historic anti-corruption campaign in a rapidly developing economy, garnering public support and strengthening the central role of the Party.
According to Nikkei Asia, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is also well-known for his academic statements that "socialism continuously enhances the material and spiritual life of the people," as he stated in a 2022 speech. The newspaper also reviewed his notable books.
Economically, Nikkei assessed that Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong led Vietnam to achieve high growth through participation in free trade agreements and other measures. Vietnam attracted foreign manufacturing companies by joining agreements like the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Global corporations, from American tech giant Apple to Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, Japanese apparel retailer Uniqlo, and others, are expanding their supply chains in Vietnam, a market becoming a hub for textiles and technological products.
According to Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Washington, major U.S. newspapers also published articles on Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's leadership career over the past 13 years.
The Washington Post highlighted that Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong led Vietnam into a period of strong economic openness and took a tough stance on anti-corruption, thereby gaining public trust in the Party's leadership over one of the most dynamic economies in the region, with a thriving startup sector.
The Washington Post also commented that Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong skillfully implemented the "bamboo diplomacy" policy as Vietnam navigated its relationships with its most important economic partners, China and the U.S., while also building relations with countries like India and Russia.
The New York Times noted that Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was an honest and simple leader. Under his leadership, Vietnam elevated its international prestige and became one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia./.
