To assist the young fishermen of the central province of Thanh Hoa, representatives from the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee held a meeting with them on May 19, primarily to discuss their current difficulties and to provide them with books and information on law on the sea among other things.

The representatives listened to the fishermen’s opinions, their hopes for the future and the pros and cons of offshore fishing generally, encouraging them to continue to fish offshore, both for their own livelihoods and to contribute to protecting Vietnam's maritime and territorial sovereignty.

Regarding China’s illegal deployment of an oil rig in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone which seriously violates the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the representatives provided the young fishermen with straightforward advice and information on the latest developments and Vietnam's response to China's illegal actions.

During the meeting, the representatives handed out books on the law of the sea for the fishermen of Sam Son town so that they could better understand the law and so act legally under Vietnamese and international legislation.

Fishermen and their families in the town also received cash incentives to continue offshore fishing and by so doing protect Vietnam's maritime and territorial integrity./.
