Fishermen’s mothers and wives in the central province of Quang Ngai staged a seaside protest on May 22nd. The event was held to show their objections to China’s deployment of the Haiyang Shiyou-981 drilling rig in Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zone, hindering fishing at Vietnam’s Paracel Archipelago.

Over 1,000 women in Binh Chau fishing village, Binh Son District joined the protest.

Mothers and wives of other fishermen raising the national flag and slogans gathered at Ganh Ca tomb, the holy worshipping site of the village, to protest China’s action in violating Vietnam’s sea and island sovereignty.

“We call on Vietnamese women and the world to protest China’s illegal action”, said Ms Nguyen Thi Ly, asking China to immediately withdraw the Haiyang Shiyou-981 drilling rig and restore peace to Vietnamese fishing communities.

A Vietnamese map displaying the Spratly and Paracel Archipelagos drawn by the women was brought to the seaside to protest China’s action. The whole commune has close to 500 fishing ships and over 4,000 fishermen. Each year, on average, they catch some 11,000 tons of seafood.
