(CPV) - The Hellenic – Vietnam Friendship Association has raised voice in firm protest against China’s illegal placement of the Haiyang Shiyou-981 drilling rig in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.

According to the association, unilateral action threatens stability and may affect the security of the region and specifically that of the East Sea. Association representatives added that maritime freedom and security against human injury is protected by international laws, which exist to ensure peace and cooperation among nations.

The association raised its voice in support of Vietnam’s peaceful measures, including legal actions to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Earlier, during a regular meeting of the ASEAN Committee at Athens, Vietnamese Ambassador to Greece, Vu Binh presented information relating to China’s actions in violation of Vietnam’s territorial sovereign integrity, sovereign rights and jurisdictional rights. The presentation set out violations of international laws, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) that China is a signatory of. China’s illegal actions have caused tension and have seriously effected both maritime and air security, safety in the East Sea area, and furthermore, the peace, stability and development in the region and in the world.

The ambassador also mentioned Vietnam’s stance, policies and peaceful measures which conform to international laws.

During the meeting, diplomats from ASEAN countries showed their concern for China’s violation of international laws and DOC while expressing their support for Vietnam’s ongoing measures./.
