Deputy Defence Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh thanked Japan for supporting Vietnam in defending territorial sovereignty, while receiving Japan's National Security Secretariat cabinet councillor Major-General Jun Nagashima in Hanoi on June 6th.
He hailed Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s keynote speech at the recent 13th Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, saying Abe showed Japan’s clear stance towards settling territorial disputes in the East and East China Seas.
Vinh also noted with satisfaction new progress in Vietnam-Japan relations, including defence cooperation.
Maj. Gen. Nagashima said Japan supports ASEAN’s East Sea stance, as well as Vietnam’s peaceful solutions to the dispute in accordance with international law.
Tensions in the East Sea have increased recently after China placed its floating drilling rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 deep inside Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.
Chinese vessels, including military ships, deployed to protect the rig, have constantly intimidated and attacked civil Vietnamese law enforcement boats at sea, injuring sailors and damaging their property./.
