Central province mobilises over VND40 billion to support fishermen

Three years after its establishment and operation, as of early August, the fund for fishermen in the central province of Quang Ngai has collected over VND40 billion from organizations, individuals and enterprises inside and outside the province to assist them in modernizing the offshore fishing trade and protecting the nation’s sea and island sovereignty.

From the total collected, over VND25 billion has been spent assisting fishermen who were arrested and whose properties were seized by the Chinese when legally going fishing in Vietnam’s waters.
The money has also been utilized to capitalize the build of 5 charitable houses for relatives of Agent Orange victims with as much as VND100 being given to law enforcement missions at sea.
In particular, for the fishermans direct benefit, two steel fishing vessels were built with VND14 million from the fund.
In July, the Quang Ngai provincial People’s Committee donated VND1 billion to the fund, in the hope of encouraging more fishermen to take to the sea.
In the near future, the fund will continue to raise capital from a wide range of sources to support the fishermen to build another 2-3 steel ships; and disseminate the content of the Government’s decree 67 on fisheries development.
The newly issued decree puts forth policies supporting fishermen’s building and upgrading of fishing vessels, providing offshore fishing services, in an attempt to facilitate favourable condition for fishermen’s fishing, contributing to protecting the nation’s sea and island sovereignty./.
