Two months after the campaign “Joining hands for the homeland’s sea and islands”, nearly VND21 billion has been collected, said campaign organizer, the Vietnam Red Cross (VRC) on August 7th.
Of the total amount collected, over VND19.1 billion has been collected from one million messages of VND18,000 each, sent independently to the national humanitarian portal. The rest has been donated directly from 121 organizations and individuals.
The campaign, held between May 19 and July 18, aimed to encourage people across the country to donate resources to provide effective equipment for use for the fisheries surveillance and coast guard forces conducting their law enforcement missions. It also aimed to assist fishermen to manage offshore fishing, to develop the sea economy and contribute to the protection of national sovereignty in the Spratly and Paracel Archipelagos.
At the closing ceremony, the organizing committee presented 93 cameras and 23 seawater to freshwater filtration systems worth VND16 billion to the Coast Guard High Command and the Fisheries Resources Surveillance.
Earlier, the VRC worked with relevant agencies to give VND60 million to fishermen of vessel DNa 90152, which was rammed by Chinese vessels in Vietnam’s Paracel and Spratly Archipelagos late May. In addition, presents worth thundreds of millions of VND were given to relatives of soldiers and fishermen who are on duty at sea.
According to Mr. Doan Van Thai, VRC Vice President and Secretary General, after the campaign, the organizing committee will focus on buying devices serving the work of coast guard and fisheries surveillance forces, caring for their lives and giving presents to disadvantaged children of forces at sea./.
