Sixty three fisheries societies established nationwide

One year after its establishment, with an initial 50 societies, 8,230 members and 2,216 fishing vessels, the Vietnam Fisheries Society now has 63 branches with 11,631 members and 2,948 fishing vessels, according to Tran Van Quy, interim president of the society.

Mr. Quy said that during its operation, the Vietnam Fisheries Society had followed the law of the sea, obeyed regulations on exploitation and protection of fishery resources; raised responsibilities in protecting the sovereignty of national territorial waters and shared mutual resources during accidents and threats at sea.

In addition, its branches across the nation had given spiritual and material encouragement to the members and fishermen, so that they felt safe in working at sea.

Vu Xuan Thuy from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) suggested the society prepare for its first congress for a renewal of operations and greater efficiency.

Fisheries societies gathered fishermen, operated to help fishing vessel owners and fishermen obey the State policies and laws in exploitation and protection of fishery resources, and raise their responsibilities in protecting the national sovereignty of the sea and islands.

According to the VGCL and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development – the societies’ founders, by late 2015, the nation will be striving to establish fisheries societies across 30-50% of coastal districts, towns and communes./.
