It is one of 7 national flag towers in the project on building national flag towers across the islands of the country, including Tran island in Quang Ninh province, Bach Long Vi in Hai Phong city, Hon La in Quang Binh province, Cu Lao Xanh in Binh Dinh province, Con Son in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province and Tho Chu in Kien Giang province.

The national flag tower on Phu Quy Iiland is almost 2.6 metres high with its face looking to the sea. Its foundation was buried under classes of stone using the same technique for building lighthouses. The flag with an area of 24 square metres used the cloth suitable for sea wind.

Being built with a total capital of over VND1.2 billion by the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), the construction is expected to be complete in late July.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Tieu Hong Phuc, Secretary of the Binh Thuan provincial Communist Youth Union, said that the construction aimed to celebrate the Party Congresses at all levels and forward the 12th National Party Congress. “The construction will be a destination for educating the nation’s sea and island sovereignty, promoting patriotism among young people, and contributing to boosting socio-economic development on the island,” he said.

Phu Quy is a distant island of Binh Thuan province. Situated 56 nautical miles from Phan Thiet city, the island covers 17.82 square kilometres and is home to 27,000 people./.
