Over 210 maritime communication devices (Icom 718) were presented to representatives from the Vietnam Red Cross in Binh Thuan, Ninh Thuan, Khanh Hoa and Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces and Ho Chi Minh city on December 20th, for distribution to fishermen owning fishing vessels of 20-89 CV capacity which do not have communication devices.
The devices were bought with capital from the campaign “Linking the East Sea” launched by the Vietnam Red Cross Central Committee in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Communications, Vietnam Television and the Voice of Vietnam.
The campaign, aiming to mobilise donations from organizations and individuals as well as overseas Vietnamese to purchase communication devices and help fishermen promptly access information on natural disasters, contributes to encouraging fishermen to go fishing, thus developing the sea economy and protecting the nation’s sea and island sovereignty.
According to Mr Doan Van Thai, Vice President of the Vietnam Red Cross, so far the campaign has collected nearly VND10 billion, buying 747 communication devices for fishermen across 24 coastal provinces and cities. In addition, the campaign has received 50 communication devices worth nearly VND730 million which were allocated to fishermen in Quang Ninh and Quang Nam provinces and Da Nang city.
There are some 8,000 fishing vessels of 20-89 CV capacity in 24 localities that receive assistance from the campaign. A majority of the vessels have not been equipped with communication devices yet. Therefore, the communication devices presented will help them receive forecasts and warnings about natural disasters from authorised agencies to avoid dangerous areas and minimise losses./.
