A commemorative ceremony for Vietnamese soldiers who died during a battle to defend Gac Ma island in Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago in March 1988 was held at Da Nang city on March 14th by Spratly archipelago veterans and those from Regiment 83 of the Corps of Engineers.

During the ceremony, cadres and soldiers burnt incense to commemorate heroes who sacrificed their lives to defend the fatherland, even when very young.

Senior lieutenant-colonel Hoang Hoan, former political commissar of Regiment 83 of the Corps of Engineers who joined the Gac Ma battle, delivered a commemorative speech in which he named 64 heroes.

“Through the commemorative ceremony, we want to remind the young generation that the national sovereignty is inviolable and that we must promote the former generations’ tradition in protecting national sovereignty,” he said.

Flowers symbolising the national flag were released into the sea to commemorate the heroes.
