Visiting salt workers to understand their life is an interesting experience when coming to the northern province of Nam Dinh.
The most famous salt field in Nam Dinh province is in Van Ly commune, Hai Hau district. Like others, salt workers work hard to produce salt.
Strong sun is the best condition for salt production. Workers have to dig drains to direct water to the fields.
From early morning, workers spread water on the fields.
Under strong sun, sea water is evaporated and the salt crystallizes. By later afternoon, the workers can harvest the salt.
All steps of production have to be done within a day to ensure the salt quality.
Despite hard work, salt workers’ income is not very high.
A majority of salt workers are older people and women.
Each kilogram of salt is sold for several thousand VND.
