Spacious fields of pink onions are being harvested by farmers on Ly Son Island to be transported to the mainland, while farmers prepare for a new season.
Besides garlic, onions are another traditional crop of farmers on Ly Son Island, the central province of Quang Ngai. A majority of families on the island grow onions and live on the crop.
Farmers reap two harvests of onions each year. At present, farmers are harvesting the rest area of the crop and starting to cultivate the land for a new season.
The agricultural products are considered “pink pearls” as they bring a remarkable amount of income for planters.
It is estimated that each hectare produces some 6 tons of onions, which are sold at some VND20,000 per kilogram. The product will be sold at much higher prices on the mainland after being dried.
Children help their parents in the fields during summer holiday.
With special quality, Ly Son onions are considered a specialty and a pride of the islanders.
After harvesting the onions, farmers start to prepare for a new crop. The new products are expected to be harvested during the lunar New Year festival.
Ly Son Island has some 130 hectares of pink onions.
