Government’s program facilitates poverty reduction in northern mountainous province

The northern mountainous province of Cao Bang is among localities benefiting from the Government’s program on supporting rapid and sustainable poverty reduction across 61 poor districts of the country (Program 30a).

Under the program, hundreds of billions of VND has been spent building traffic infrastructure, medical stations and water supply projects in the 5 districts of Ha Quang, Thong Nong, Bao Lac, Bao Lam and Ha Lang.

In addition, local residents have been provided with seedlings, animals and employment. They have also been assisted with trade promotion programs, the introduction of products, and the realization of effective production models, including planting sugarcane for export and raising pigs and cows.

The efforts have helped to reduce the poverty rate to 25.74% in 2015 from 61.25% in 2011 in the 5 districts.

Realizing that bamboo is suitable for the local land and climate conditions, the province has expanded bamboo area to raise residents’ income.

Sugarcane has become a spearhead crop for economic development and poverty reduction in mountainous border localities.

Bull fights, a highlight of traditional culture, have helped to bolster cultural life for Tay, H’Mong and Dao ethnic minorities.

Farmers in Thong Nong district are often instructed on how to plant rice effectively.

Cao Bang province has focused on raising the quality of Vietnamese language teaching for ethnic minority children.

Raising bees for honey has opened up an effective method of poverty reduction for many ethnic minority families in the province.

A large number of ethnic minority families in Bao Lam district have increased their incomes by raising pigs, and are looking towards to build up the trademark of the pig in the district.
