The Tien Giang provincial Veterinary Department has carried out a duck raising model in areas that are affected by salt intrusion, in an attempt to deal with the consequences of climate change.
After 10 months of pilot breeding by 4 coastal families in Tan Phu Dong district, the model has proven its efficiency. So far, the model has been expanded among 24 coastal families whose production land is salinized, developing a new way to boost economic development and create jobs for coastal labourers.
The flock of ducks of breeder Nguyen Thi Kim Hieu in Phu Dong commune grows 10-15% faster than earlier breeding.
The breeding ducks which are developed by the Dai Xuyen duck research centre under the Institute of Animal Sciences of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development can be raised for meat or eggs using industrial food, rice, oysters and a variety of fish from the sea. The ducks can drink water with salinity of 8% -10%, gaining weight of 2.5-3 kilograms within 3 months, and reporting egg birth rate of over 75%.
A worker from the Tien Giang provincial Veterinary Department vaccinates the ducks and gives breeding instruction to breeders in Phu Dong commune. The project has given 100% breeding support, 25% food support and 25% sanitation medicine support for breeders.
Ducks are raised in areas that can no longer be used for shrimp production due to salinization, making a new path for domestic economic development.
An agent buys eggs as a stable consumption address for breeders.
The eggs are bigger and more delicious than normal duck eggs. Being sold at VND5,000 per egg, each breeding family can earn between VND200,000-400,000 per day in profit.
