So confirmed Nguyen Thien Nhan, Politburo member and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF), as he responded to tree planting festival in the northern province of Vinh Phuc on February 6th.

According to Mr. Nhan, the festival was launched by President Ho Chi Minh on November 28th, 1959 with a hope that the country would be more beautiful and the climate would be more equable in the next 10 years, thus making contribution to improve people’s living standards.

“Tree planting festival has become a good movement of the Vietnamese people during the lunar New Year festival, which has contributed to protecting the environment, boosting the socio-economic development, and raising people’s living standards,” Mr. Nhan confirmed.

The VFF President noted that the benefits of afforestation could only be seen after 5 or 10 years; however, the consequences deforestation causes on society could be seen immediately. “Planting trees helps reduce land erosion, reduce the loss of land nutrition and reduce flooding, while planting trees helps make the air clean, increases wood for national development, expands shade for children to play, for the elderly to rest, and produce more fruits for each family,” he clarified the interests of tree planting.

He stressed that deforestation meant destruction of the foundation for long-term life and meant the destruction of the backbone of each household.

According to the VFF President, it is necessary to make afforestation and tree planting a habit of the Vietnamese people.

On this occasion, the VFF President praised the initiative by the Vietnam Farmers’ Association and the Vinh Phuc provincial People’s Committee to launch the tree planting festival aiming to plant 800,000 trees./.
