Farmers in Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh city, are busy harvesting melon, the typical fruit of sunny days.
The melon season starts in March, according to Mr. Vu Viet Phuong, a farmer in Trung Lap Thuong commune.
Mr. Phuong is selecting ripe melon fruits to harvest. “Growing melon brings greater earnings than planting rice,” he said. “My family plants melon on one hectare, harvesting over 30 tons of melon each season.”
Each fruit weighs between 3-9 kilograms. It takes about 55 days from planting to harvesting.
Ms Nguyen Thi Thi is busy harvesting ripe fruits on the field. She said that her family had planted melon for the past 3 years.
Carrying melons from the fields to the road requires the strength of youth.
Mr. Dat said that each day he earned VND13,000 to transport melons from the fields to the road.
Good quality melons are selected to sell to traders.
Farmers are happy with a bumper crop.
Each kilogram of melon is sold for only VND3,000-5,000 from the field.
Melon is sold to a truck driver on the road.
Melon is transported to inner Ho Chi Minh city for consumption.
According to trader Nguyen Thi Hien, each trader can buy some 3-6 tons of melon per day. “The melon is then consumed in Ho Chi Minh city, Binh Duong, Tay Ninh, Ba Ria – Vung Tau provinces, and even Cambodia,” said Ms Hien./.
