(CPV) - The draft Law on Planning is currently under preparation by the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) and is being consulted with Ministries and relevant stakeholders, and discussed at the National Assembly.

The new Law on Planning is expected to bring fundamental changes in the planning process, especially requirements for integrated planning.

Integrated planning requires holistic consideration of economic, social and environmental issues, especially in the context of climate change adaptation and mitigation. The new Law would be an important legal basis for the effective implementation of the objectives of Sustainable Development, the National Green Growth and Response to Climate Change in Vietnam.

In this context, the MPI has organized a workshop in Hanoi on October 2nd on "Integrated spatial planning: Integrating ecosystem services and climate change into planning” supported by the UN-REDD Vietnam Phase II Program and German Development Cooperation GIZ.

The aim of the workshop is to identify key considerations in order for integrated land-use planning to be taken up in the policy/legal framework. Specifically, requirements and opportunities for the integration of ecosystem services and climate change into spatial planning processes will be identified. International experiences as well as tools and methods for integrated spatial planning will be presented by experts. Discussions will lead to the identification of practical ways forward and next steps to achieve the integration of ecosystem services and climate change into spatial planning frameworks.

About 80 participants will attend from line Ministries and agencies involved in the planning process as well as think-tanks, research institutes, NGOs and international organizations in Vietnam. Delegations from neighboring nations (Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia) involved in integrated planning will participate at the invitation of UN-REDD Program.

Following the workshop in Hanoi, a four-day technical learning session, from October 3rd-6th, on spatial analysis and other tools, specifically designed to support integrated land-use planning and mainstreaming multiple benefits in REDD+ planning will be at the Institute of Forest Ecology and Environment (IFEE), Vietnam National University of Forestry (VNUF) by the UN-REDD Vietnam Phase II Program in partnership with UN Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC).
