Over 4,000 ethnic minority children have benefited from the pilot Emergent Literacy and Math Toolkit (ELM) which helps them get acquainted with reading, writing and maths, while over 2,200 teachers and child caretakers have been assisted with the ability to raise children’s skills to step into their first year of primary education.

The figures were announced during a meeting to review the ELM project held recently by Save the Children and the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET).

Accordingly, the project has contributed to increasing readiness to go to school and comprehensive development of ethnic minority pupils in Yen Bai and Quang Nam provinces by improving the educational environment at schools and at home.

After 3 years, the results showed that there had been remarkable development in children’s early education. In particular, their exercise skills increased by 44-56%, early reading and writing skills increased by 21-37%, maths access skills increased by 38-50% and social affection increased by 27-32%.

Talking about the toolkit, Nguyen Anh Tuan, Head of Quang Nam province’s Tay Giang district Department of Education and Training, said teachers in the district have combined the implementation of the development of maths, writing and reading skills with Co Tu ethnic minority culture in creating an educational toolkit for children, which makes them love education more and achieve remarkable progress in getting acquainted with maths, writing and reading in pre-school classes.

Specifically, the toolkit has instructed teachers and parents on how to encourage the children to be interested in studying by using familiar activities and equipment around them.

MOET will continue to work with Save the Children to make the toolkit fit Vietnam’s reality before applying it in training pre-school teachers./.
