Liem reaches highest position of Vietnam at world rapid tournament

Grandmaster Le Quang Liem came in at 41st position in the overall rankings of the rapid event in the World Rapid & Blitz Championships 2024, the highest recorded by a Vietnamese player so far in the global rapid competition.

On the final competition day on December 29, Liem defeated Rakhmanov Aleksandr of Russia and Sadhwani Raunak of India. He recorded two draws against Martirosyan Haik M of Armenia and Theodorou Nikolas of Greece.

Liem had a total of eight points and ranked 41st in the overall rankings.

His teammate Le Tuan Minh earned 6.5 points and came in at 92nd position. The 135th position went to Banh Gia Huy with 5.5 points.

The Vietnamese chess team will continue to compete in blitz event from December 30 to December 31.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Rapid & Blitz Championships 2024 runs from December 26 to December 31 in the United States, with the event drawing the participation of 300 of the best players from around the world.

In 2023, Vietnam didn’t participate in the tournament. Back in 2022, Le Tuan Minh was the nation’s sole representative at the tournament, finishing among the Top 22 of the men's rapid chess event and in the Top 55 in the men's blitz chess event.

One of the most popular and prestigious chess tournaments held by the FIDE, the World Rapid & Blitz Championships has been held in North America for the first time ever./.
