Vietnam, with more than 3,200 km of coastline and nearly 3,000 large and small islands, not only possesses rich natural resources but also has an important strategic position in the region. These values not only bring economic benefits but also affirm the sovereignty and protect the territorial integrity of the Fatherland.

According to the Government's report, the marine economy currently contributes about 47-48% of the country's GDP, in which the oil and gas, fisheries and tourism industries are the main pillars. In particular, the Truong Sa and Hoang Sa archipelagos play a strategic role in protecting important international shipping routes.
The marine ecosystem is also very diverse, contributing to the global ecological balance. Despite its strategic location, Vietnam's seas and islands still face many challenges.
The issue of marine environment protection is an urgent requirement. Every year, Vietnam discharges many tons of plastic waste into the sea, negatively affecting biodiversity and aquatic resources.
Efforts and solutions to protect seas and islands
The Government has issued a Strategy for sustainable development of the marine economy until 2030, with a vision to 2045, with the goal of making Vietnam a strong maritime nation. Events such as the Sea and Islands Week and World Oceans Day on June 8 are held annually to raise public awareness of environmental protection and sovereignty over seas and islands.

In particular, international cooperation initiatives such as participating in COP26 and committing to achieve Net Zero by 2050 demonstrate Vietnam's determination to protect seas and islands, both in terms of environment and economic development.
Protecting seas and islands is not only the task of the State but also the responsibility of every citizen. Actions such as reducing plastic use, protecting the marine environment or participating in propaganda all contribute to affirming the will and love for the Fatherland.
The sea and islands are an inseparable part of Vietnam. More than ever, protecting the sea and islands means protecting the future of the nation. With the spirit of solidarity and determination, Vietnam will forever maintain its sovereignty, develop a sustainable economy, and contribute to building a peaceful and stable region./.
