SEA Games 29: Vietnam touches gold medals target

On August 26th, the seventh official day of the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia, the Vietnamese sports delegation received much good news on the last competing day of athletics and swimming athletes.

Vietnamese athletics continued to confirm its superior strength by bringing in three gold medals, raising the total number of gold medals to 17, doubling those of athletes ranked second in this subject – Thailand.

The attention focused on the Bukit Jalil underwater palace in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, where the last finals of the swimming competition took place.

At the women's 200m freestyle swimming, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien scored 1 minute 59 seconds 24, breaking her own record set at the SEA Games (1 minute 59 seconds 27). At the end of this year's games, the "Little Mermaid" won a total of eight gold medals (with two silver medals), the same achievement she made in Singapore two years ago.

Meanwhile, young athlete Nguyen Huy Hoang scored 15 minutes 20 seconds 10 at the 1,500m swimming, breaking the record to more than 10 seconds which was made by his teammate Lam Quang Nhat at the previous games. Lam Quang Nhat also broke his own record with 15 minutes, 23 seconds 94, winning the silver medal on the same track.

Vietnamese table tennis players defeated Singapore 3-1 in the men’s team to win the gold medal after eight years.

As of the end of August 26th, the Vietnamese sports delegations won 50 gold medals while the set target for the 29th SEA Games is 49-59 gold medals./.
