On June 28th, in the northwestern mountainous province of Lao Cai, the Ministry of Health coordinated with Lao Cai provincial People’s Committee to send the first 7 young volunteer doctors to work in disadvantaged districts.

The event is under the pilot project to send doctors to 37 disadvantaged districts in 13 provinces.

Seven doctors who are working at Bach Mai Hospital and Vietnam National Children’s Hospital will work in four provinces, including Lao Cai (3 doctors), Bac Kan (2 doctors), Son La (1 doctor) and Dien Bien (1 doctor).

Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said that the project will enhance access to high-quality healthcare service for people in mountainous, remote, border areas and islands. She added that the project is a breakthrough for the health sector to ensure professional human resources in the health sector in disadvantaged areas.

This will help local people to have increasing quality healthcare service and limit unnecessary treatment transfers, contributing to reducing the overload in hospitals at central levels and preventing waste for local people, community and society. Besides, it will create opportunity for young doctors to contribute their strength and intelligence, and promote their volunteer role to contribute to national construction and development.

So far, 78 doctors have been recruited for the project. 25 of them were accepted in 12 hospitals under the Ministry of Health to volunteer to work in 19 poor districts in ten provinces. 53 of them were enrolled to work in 30 disadvantaged districts in 12 provinces.

According to Departments of Health in disadvantaged districts, there is a need for about 600 doctors in 62 poor districts.

In 2013, the Ministry of Health approved a pilot project on sending young volunteer doctors to mountainous, remote, border and island areas (giving priority for 62 disadvantaged districts). It aimed to provide healthcare human resources to improve healthcare services at the grassroots level.

The Ministry has partnered with the Hanoi Medical University to devise a framework and detailed training curricula for doctors trained under the project./.
